Hello, I’m Paul, and I will be your tutor. I’ve spent thousands of hours making music over the last 20 years and have real-world experience working with labels and releasing music as well as teaching people to be able to achieve this themselves.
I absolutely love what I do and I genuinely care about my students’ development.
I’ve worked on releases for some of the world's top labels including Strictly Rhythm / Armada, Toolroom, Ministry of Sound, Hed Kandi, CR2, Hot Waves, Nervous Records NYC, Mexa Records, New State Entertainment, Warehouse Music, and many more. My own tracks and my students' tracks have been featured on radio stations around the world including BBC Radio One and Two and have received millions of plays on Spotify.
As well as working on a lot of electronic music, I’ve worked in a professional studio (The Magic Garden - EMI, Virgin, BMG, B-Unique, Universal…) recording major label artists and bands. This was generally recording “real” instruments and involved working on large consoles and high-end analogue equipment - my experience there was invaluable.
I spend my time teaching music production, mixing for clients, composing/producing for other artists as well as working on my own musical projects and music for sync.

I’ve tried lessons with a couple of different tutors and felt like they hadn’t listened to what I asked for but I’m really enjoying my lessons with Paul and we’ve achieved exactly what I wanted. He comes prepared with samples, ideas and a good plan for the lesson. Paul matched his teaching to my set-up and the lessons are a good balance of learning theory, practical use, sound design with the mentality of achieving the desired result.
Paul has an amazing ear and seems to be able to hear the smallest details and his practical knowledge is brilliant.
I find Paul to be both motivated and motivating as well as having a lot of patience understanding. I’m looking forward to more lessons!

I’m really grateful to have had lessons with Paul as he got me from being stuck in a rut to enjoying it again and making new tracks with more knowledge and better flow. I liked the pace and feel of the classes. They were tailored to my tastes and there were little golden nuggets that led to light bulb moments. He’s a great teacher and it’s easy to ask him questions.

After accumulating a catalogue of unfinished music I sought out the guidance of Paul. With his one on one tutoring, I have improved the quality of my productions and have a better understanding of how I can finally finish my tracks.
Paul has shown me the best ways to incorporate my hardware recordings with software plugins and Ableton processing. Would highly recommend it to anybody interested in Music production.

Paul is patient, easy to get along with, friendly and open to teaching you in the way that works to your favoured learning method.
His knowledge and application of music production and mixing are incredible and I look forward to every lesson because I'll learn something that will expand the possibilities of what I want my music to sound like but also give scope for new creative directions that will enhance what I'm working on.

As a novice hobbyist music producer, I have watched a lot of YouTube tutorials but was unable to progress. I realised that tutorials could seldom help you in your specific context. You need to have someone with whom you can ask questions and who could guide you most efficiently on your path.
I have found Paul and I am very happy with my progress so far. I like his professional yet friendly manner of teaching and the fact that I make progress after every lesson. He has thorough explanations for anything I ask him. He also has an amazing musical ear, noticing details in sounds hidden in a mix that I would not be able to notice myself.
I fully recommend Paul as a great music tutor that will help you become a better producer with every lesson.

How do online lessons work? What equipment do I need?
Lessons are carried out using Zoom and screenshare. I will generally annotate your screen to guide you whilst explaining concepts etc. Sometimes I may use my computer to demonstrate but mostly, you will be doing the work! This is far more effective than me taking control and doing everything for you.
Zoom’s audio quality isn’t great so we’ll also use a plugin that streams high quality audio between computers. This is easy to set up (I’ll help you do this) and won’t cost you anything.
Equipment
To begin with, all you will need is a stable internet connection, a computer and a pair of headphones. Anything else is a bonus but not necessary.
If you don’t yet own any production software, that’s fine. Both Logic and Ableton come with 90 day free trials and I can help you set this up too.
If you have any concerns about your equipment, you can send me a message here.
Can I learn the same things by watching videos online?
YouTube videos can be a great resource, in fact I might even recommend some from time to time. The issue is, there is a lot of bad advice. Sometimes it’s so bad it can actually set you back somewhat.
Obviously, they’re not all bad and there are some good online courses, but video courses can only ever be general advice and don't take on board your specific situation.
Learning 1-2-1 means having someone with years of experience listening to your music, showing you where you might be going wrong, and guiding you through the process.
Will this save me time?
In short, yes.
There are many benefits of taking 1-2-1 lessons vs video learning, including being able to get feedback and ask questions. At the very least, this speeds up your learning but it also leads to a much deeper understanding.
One of the other major benefits is that you won’t learn bad habits in the first place and you can avoid making the mistakes most producers (including myself) make whilst learning to produce, which can add years to your learning journey.
It’s a much more direct route to becoming a great producer and avoids the unnecessary rabbit holes most of us get caught up in.
I make (insert genre) music. Is that something you do?
Like many people, my own personal tastes are extremely diverse. I listen to, and make, a wide variety of music.
My own background involves producing a wide range of music (most forms of Dance Music, Electronic Music, Pop, Hip-Hop, Soul, Trap, Dub-Step, Drum & Bass etc) as well as recording and mixing bands and solo artists of various styles (Indie, Metal, Rock, Folk, Acoustic, etc).
There are a surprising amount of similarities shared between even the most apparently opposed styles (particularly in the mixing process). I’d like to think I’ve got a good framework to approach any genre and I actively welcome musical diversity.
No judgments here.
I use (insert programme) to produce music. Is that a problem?
I mainly use both Logic and Ableton and know those programmes well, but If you’re already quite familiar with a particular DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) then that’s fine. Mixing and production techniques are universal and work in any DAW.
It should be noted however, that I may not be able to offer in-depth insight into a DAW’s features If I’ve never used that particular programme before. I have used many different DAW’s however, and always found the transition to be quite painless.
The focus is less on using any particular bit of software and is aimed more at teaching you to become a producer. The tech stuff is important but it's only one part of the puzzle - and who knows what you might use in the future. I definitely didn’t start out on the DAW that I use now but the principles remain the same.
Can I do a one-off lesson?
Yes. If you want guidance for a specific topic, or mix feedback etc, then a one-off booking might be useful.
However, if your intention is to learn about music production as a whole, then a one-off lesson most likely isn't going to provide much benefit, due to the way lessons are structured.
The prices are discounted for weekly lessons and lessons of two or more hours per week. There are no commitments and if you’re not happy with your first lesson, your money will be refunded in full.
Please provide any information you feel might be useful.
